Finding Social Media Gold

I spend the majority of my day NOT reading blogs, Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, but occasionally I trip over some "social media gold."  Today, I want to share with you three great sources from my online explorations in the past month.  I've provided essential links with each of these.  Please check out all three!

Discovery #1:  I'm not sure how I discovered the blog Marking Our Territory, but I'm glad it found it's way to my computer screen.  In this blog, Will, tells the story of his life with his two dogs, Eko and Penny. It gives me a smile every day, and it's a perfect example of how to keep your blog focused on one topic (writers take note). Check it out, especially if you're tired of all the negativity in social media these days.

Discovery #2:  A few days ago, a friend posted about an entrepreneur in Charlotte who wants to open a specialized indie bookstore, but not just any bookstore.  The best way to explain it is to share a blurb from the website:

"More than anything, Worlds of Wonder hopes to be a one of a kind spot where everyone can freely express their interests in geeky stuff. Kind of like a sports bar for nerds, where instead of showing sports on the big TV we show Sharknado 3; instead of loud TVs blaring throughout the place, the acoustic ambience allows conversations (and gaming); a place where people into Game of Thrones, the Dresden Files, and Firefly can assemble with just as much joy as the guys (girls) into football, baseball, or basketball in other bars."

Discovery #3:  Last, but definitely NOT least, my friend, David B. Coe, posted a great blog yesterday that reveals the truth many writers need to know:  everyone has doubts, even those of us who are very successful like David.  Please check it out, and if you're not reading David's books (writing as David B. Coe and D B Jackson) correct that problem today!

Oh, and the picture on my post today is of me with David B. Coe and Cayce and Dr. Kasie.  We met because of our love of writing SciFi\Fan and remain in contact thanks to social media.

Character Development: Using the Johari Window

In my last post, Character Development: the Johari Window , I introduced the Johari Window as a tool for developing your characters. It's important that your character not know everything about their situation. These unknowns can lead to an intriguing story and create possibilities for conflict within the story. How do you use the Johari Window? In this post, I thought I'd provide a simple example of the Johari Window with a character most people know:  Harry Potter. Below, I have filled out the Johari Window as it might appear within the first few pages of book 1, Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone . The Johari Window based on Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone Three of the quadrants in this window reveal what Harry doesn't know about who he truly is and what happened to his parents. Should Christians Watch The Hunger Games?

The question stunned me.  I had never looked at The Hunger Games as a threat to our society, so the email asking why I, as a Christian, could promote a movie/book where children kill children caught me off guard.  My friend admitted, she had not read the books or seen the movie, so her opinion was based on plot information found online, but all I could think is that's not really what The Hunger Games is about.  It does not glorify children killing children.  Sure, there is the arena - which is a large wilderness - where twenty-four children are launched into the game of kill or be killed, but that's only looking at this story from the surface. Even so, I realized my friend gave me a rare opportunity. Rather than blast me, she told me her concerns and asked if I could explain why many Christians support and rave about this story.  I thanked her and asked for a few days to gather my thoughts.  I even re-read the first book in the series with her concern foremost in my mind.
