Why World Giraffe Day Matters

World Giraffe Day is less than a week away, June 21, Why June 21? It's the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the longest night of the year in the southern hemisphere. Seems appropriate for the tallest animal on earth.

In case you're new to me and have never heard about the giraffe's silent extinction, you can check out the following links for more info:

Research conducted by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) tells us there are roughly 117,000 giraffes in the wild. Why haven't you heard about it? Because until a few decades ago, no one researched Africa's most iconic animal. To put their numbers in perspective, there are 4 elephants for every 1 giraffe in the wild. That statistic blows my mind. Again, someone has to be researching an animal for us to realize it's danger of extinction. That's what makes GCF's efforts and research so important!

What can you do?

First of all, feel free to share this post. Also, follow GCF on Facebook and share their posts. GCF focuses on research, education, and relocating giraffes. They can use your help whether through education or a donation. Added bonus! All donations to GCF from now until June 21, 2021 will be matched up to $10,000. That's a great way to double your impact!

Also, I'm participating in The World Giraffe Day Celebration site on Facebook. This is an auction site where you can bid on items—many of them giraffe-focused—and all the funds raised go to GCF to continue their efforts. This is a dedicated group of people who love and promote giraffe conservation, so they are not part of GCF. If you have never visited this site, you will want to join the group, so you can enjoy the fun and enthusiasm of people who love giraffes!

There will be lots of great items in the auction which starts on June 18 and runs through June 28. Different items will be available at different times. I will share on my Facebook Author Page once my item is posted for bids.

Here's what I'm contributing:

  • The Watchers of Moniah trilogy personally signed by me (where giraffes play a significant role)
  • A photo poem of a mother giraffe and her calf (that's Autumn and Kiko) suitable for a nursery
  • Two magnets: one from a photo I took of Kiko when he was 4 days old and one with a significant saying out of The Watchers at War (book 3 of the trilogy)
  • A giraffe-themed luggage tag
  • A keychain with The Watchers in Exile (book 2) keychain
  • A 30 minute Zoom call with the author (me) and up to 30 of your friends

In case you're wondering, this one auction item is worth $200!

Whether you participate in the auction, contribute to GCF, or focus on getting the word out, you will Stand Tall for Giraffe!
